National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Written by OUM Risk Management Specialist | May 11, 2023 10:31:43 PM

May is National Physical Fitness & Sports Month! American leaders have long recognized the importance of fitness. In the 1950s President Eisenhower created the President’s Council on Youth Fitness. In the 1960s, President Kennedy renamed the council the President’s Council on Physical Fitness to encourage people of all ages to lead active lifestyles.

Since 1983, each President has proclaimed May as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month to promote the importance of physical activity, physical fitness, and sports participation. National Physical Fitness and Sports Month provides healthcare practitioners – and particularly chiropractors – with an opportunity to further educate and encourage their patients and community to adopt healthy lifestyles to improve physical and mental well-being.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion provides fact sheets, posters, videos, social media messages, and more to help you promote physical activity and youth sports. These resources can be found here on the health.gov website.

Encourage your patients to get moving in May!
